So, you took the time to make your own crust. Now you want to take it all the way and make the sauce your own as well. Start with this simple recipe and remember to give it time for the seasonings to do their thing before you smear it on your pizza or flatbread. The seasoning suggestions are just that…suggestions. Find the combination of flavors that you like best, or change it a little from time to time. That’s the best thing about DIY.
1 can of Tomato Paste
6-8 oz warm water
1/2 t. garlic powder
1/2 t. onion powder
Dried basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, etc.
Freshly ground black pepper
Dash of white pepper (for some heat, if desired)
Salt to taste
Combine all of the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat, selecting as few or as many dried herbs as you want to use. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, until the sauce reaches the desired thickness. (If you want a really thick sauce, you might want to start with less water.)Remove from the heat and let stand at room temperature for 15-20 minutes to cool and for flavors to mature before spreading on dough.
